Method Validation: What is it?
What does it mean for a method to be validated?
A validated method simply means that the method has been shown to provide accurate and consistent results through a series of experiments.
What is involved in method validation?
Method validation involves numerous experiments. The criteria are usually defined by a regulatory body. Typically, these experiments involve, at a minimum:
- Determining the Limit of Quantitation (LOQ) for each analyte
- Determining the Limit of Detection (LOD) for each analyte
- Selectivity
- Sensitivity
- Linearity & Range
- Recovery
- Accuracy
- Precision
Why is method validation important?
Method validation proves the scientific robustness of an analytical method used to quantitate an analyte. Validation shows that methods consistently produce accurate results for its intended use. Methods are required to be validated to get certain accreditations, such as ISO 17025. A quality testing laboratory will validate all methods.
